HomePr. Orman Gwinn

Orman J. Gwynn is an American pastor, missionary, and evangelist whose life and ministry have become deeply connected to Brazil, especially in the context of evangelical growth in the North and Northeast regions of the country. Married to Elizabeth for 74 years, the couple dedicated more than three decades to the Brazilian mission field.

Answering the missionary calling, Orman Gwynn came to Brazil, where he served for 32 years alongside his wife. During this period, they lived in several cities, including Itabuna, in Bahia; Corrente, in Piauí; São Luís, in Maranhão; Belém, in Pará; and also Brasília. His work was broad and strategic, reaching both urban centers and interior regions, often difficult to access. In addition to being a pastor and missionary, Gwynn was also a pilot, which allowed him to reach remote areas of the Northeast and significantly expand the reach of his ministry.

Throughout his journey, he held significant leadership roles. He served as director of the Equatorial Seminary in the 1980s, contributing directly to the training of new workers, and also worked as executive director of the Baptist Convention of Piauí for a period. Recognized as an excellent teacher of Homiletics and a skilled preacher of the gospel, he left a profound mark on the lives of many students, pastors, and leaders. He impacted generations with his faith, simplicity, and commitment to the work of God.

His ministry was also decisive in church planting. He played a role in the founding of the First Baptist Church of Alto Parnaíba, serving as the official speaker at the inaugural service. In addition, he and his wife were instrumental in the founding of El Shaddai Baptist Church in São Sebastião, in the Federal District, among many others.

Today, at 92 years of age, the story of Orman Gwynn remains a living testimony of faith, obedience, and dedication for new generations. Even after so many years of service, the impact of his life continues to be remembered with gratitude.

Visit of Pastor Fernando Brandão to Mr. and Mrs. Gwynn in December 2025.

Reflecting on his journey, Pastor Orman Gwynn stated: “It was worth it, and if I could, I would do it all over again. The joy of seeing God’s work grow, the happiness of seeing people make themselves available to God, new churches, baptisms… the blessings are countless! I would do it all over again, a thousand times.” His words reveal the conviction and joy that have always marked his walk.

Elizabeth, his wife, also shared meaningful memories: “We were very well received in Brazil. Even as foreigners, God placed many good people in our path. It was magnificent to see people giving their lives to Christ. We were able to witness the goodness and faithfulness of God to His Word.” She also recalls the initial challenges: “I cannot lie, at first I missed home very much. But later, whenever I returned to the United States, I longed to come back to Brazil.”

In a simple and practical way, the pastor left a piece of advice to the new students of the Equatorial Seminary: “The most important thing is to obey the Lord. He is faithful. He will never ask you to do something without providing everything you need.” And, together with his wife, he summarizes his final message of life and ministry: “It is worth serving God. Christ is the only hope.”
