When we are full of ourselves, we cannot see the plank in our own eye. Arrogance begins to rule within us and this can destroy our family. We must reflect on the life of Manasseh, who received an impeccable kingdom from his father. However, he tried a new way of living and, even trying, he was unable to restore everything, because it is easier to destroy everything than to rebuild. Let us see what happens when we turn away from the Lord and seek to learn that changing what is right is not at all healthy. The Word of God is a book that is a daily discovery. When we forget to meditate on His Word, we lose the meaning of life. When we encounter it every day, we always discover something new. There are always things to learn from reading the Word of the Lord, and Josiah was absolutely certain of this. However, it was not like this with all the kings.

ALL THAT GLITTERS IS NOT GOLD (2 Kings 21; 2 Chronicles 33)

Everything was going well until the arrival of Manasseh, the longest reigning king of Judah, more than five decades reigning among the people. Hezekiah, his father, was the best king, just and pious, but his son was completely different. Not all that glitters is gold. “From the pinnacle of religious fervor the kingdom of the South was projected into the darkest era of idolatry”[1].

The contrast between Hezekiah and Manasseh shows that we need to invest in people instead of things. Hezekiah was faithful, but Manasseh was completely unfaithful. He did the opposite of what his father did, a true bloodthirsty man, not even sparing the innocent (2 Kings 21:16). Hezekiah led the people to worship the Lord genuinely, while his son led them to defy Him periodically. “Judah began to celebrate the Assyrian astrological cult and to practice all kinds of magic and divination”[2]. Furthermore, along with the occult, they were accepted as common practices[3].

Many who claim to be believers today are superstitious: they play the numbers game, buy newspapers to read horoscopes, take the sick to a folk healer, etc. Today, it seems that the evangelicals accept everything, seeking to rely on texts taken out of context to authenticate their practices. Beware of those who preach that the Bible is a book that needs to be reformulated, this is extremely dangerous. Changing truths for convenience is not the path to true revival, because everything begins with love and obedience to the Word, as Pastor Paschoal said: “there is no middle ground”[4]. Many want to dialogue with the world, sit at the table and have a coffee as if this were normal, but the Word of the Lord warns us to live a rational worship of the Lord.

Manasseh was rebuked by the Lord along with the people because of their spiritual misery, but they did not listen to anything they heard. So the Lord ordered the Assyrians to arrest Manasseh and take him into captivity. “The emperor’s officers seized him, put a ring in his nose, as was done with wild oxen, and put chains on his feet and hands, and in front of all his people he was taken to the prisons of Babylon”[5].

What a shame! Humiliated before everyone. This is what happens when we sin against God, we are ashamed and, sometimes, only in these moments do we turn to Him and recognize His Lordship. Manasseh, distressed, begs the Lord for mercy, humbles himself and prays to the Lord who answers him and makes him return to Jerusalem. In the meantime, he recognizes his faults and believes that the Lord was the only God. He carried out a religious reform again and sought to lead the people to worship only the Lord (2 Chronicles 33).

Manasseh tried to restore everything, but this was certainly not possible and the case of his son is an example. Amon reigned for only two years and copied only the bad things of his father (2 Kings 21.20). Certainly, “the training received by Amon in his early years had a decisively stronger impact on him than the period of reforms later”[6]. Amon did not humble himself before the Lord as his father had done and became even more guilty (2 Chronicles 33:22,23).

There is no such thing as an innocent sin; sin is sin regardless of the circumstances. Our choices have consequences for us. Amon was the victim of a conspiracy and was murdered. It is never too late to turn to the Lord. Even at your last breath, the Lord can and wants to save you. Do not be proud like Amon. There is no one as bad as Manasseh that God cannot restore.

A NEW BEGINNING (2 Kings 22; 23.1-34; 2 Chronicles 34-36.4)

Amon was brutally assassinated and his son Josiah, when he was still a child, took over the kingdom of Judah. Despite his young age, Josiah was a good king (2 Kings 22:2). It was a new beginning for Judah. Josiah promoted a new religious reform, which was certainly not easy. His grandfather left a healthy environment for his father, who, in turn, made a point of putting an end to it all.

Josiah was the second great reformer of Judah and his focus as king was set from an early age: “he had to rid the land of idolatry and restore the worship of the Lord if his nation wanted to have any chance of surviving”[7], since the warnings, if this did not happen, were outlined and warned by the Lord. Thus, he began his reform from the most propitious place, the temple. The reforms, in turn, were not only in the structures, but in religious practices. He eradicated idolatry and overthrew the idols; it was the last but most comprehensive reform. No king had done what he did. It was a widespread reform, and after everything was properly organized, the worship of the one true God restored, all idolatry and all pagan priests expelled, it was time to celebrate Easter.

A true revival took place during the reign of Josiah. He took the Word of God seriously, even more so after he found the Book of the Law of the Lord. He held the Word of God in high regard because he was a pious man, and God draws near to pious men. The closer we are to God, the closer He is to us. When they consulted the Lord, they learned that punishment was imminent for the people, but because of Josiah’s piety, he would be spared this dark moment. He would be taken away so that his eyes would not see such great punishment.

King Josiah was overcome by a great awakening when he finished reading the Book of the Law, for “when he heard the reading of the Book of the Law, the king tore his clothes” (2 Kings 22:11; 2 Chronicles 34:19). As the reformer Luther once said: “Before the Word of God, everyone must yield.” Reading and studying the Word of God is what keeps us steadfast. It is through the Scriptures that we know the end of the story. It guides us through the darkness of life. It is a beacon, a compass for the lost. Therefore, when we read and study the Word of God, we draw closer to Him because it confronts us in our sins and leads us to live a life of holiness. Genuine revival begins with our knees on the ground and the Word in our hearts.

In the kingdom of Judah, the most brilliant king in God’s eyes was Josiah. However, his son Jehoahaz was a wicked man who left nothing good as a legacy. Everything that is said about him can be summed up in the following statement: “He did evil in the sight of the Lord” (2 Kings 23:32). His fate was captivity, because Pharaoh Necho “had him arrested […] so that he would not reign in Jerusalem” (2 Kings 23:33).

CONCLUSION

There is no doubt that the worst kings of Judah were Manasseh and his son Amon, but let me tell you something very important: there are no lost causes for the Lord. There is no deepest pit of sin that the grace of God cannot reach. God changes our fortunes, frees us and takes us out of prison, leads us to do the right things and helps us in the execution of our mission. God works first in us and begins to use us for the praise of His glory. Know that what condemns you is being far from Him; what condemns you is your struggle in not wanting to be born again and accept your current condition, so I invite you today to have a new life in Christ and have your life transformed.

[4] JR PIRAGINE, Paschoal.
